The students of the Department of International Studies and History, CHRIST (Deemed To Be University) were engaged in a lecture series on challenges to democracy in 21st Century by professor Peter Jonkers. Democracy across the globe had undergone various challenges over period of time. As many scholars point out, Indian democracy was put to test, during the times of Emergency as well as even today, when the nation is ranging over citizenship amendment act.
Professor Jonkers provided a wide range of perspectives and scholarly arguments with the students of political science, in one of the best institute for academic discussion in South India. John Rawls and Habermas where two scholars who were the reference point throughout the lecture whose established work were used as references to understand contemporary challenges in European, US and Indian politics. The area of focus, where human dignity, conflicts over value pluralism, religious tolerance.
Students of International Studies engaged in cross cultural, social and political analysis of situations across the world, to understand the merits and possibilities as well as the drawback of scholarly theories. The event was attended by professors, undergraduates and post-graduate students, and MPhil and PhD students.
